Boss Fight Books

A crowd-sourced marketing strategy and distinctive design pay off again and again for this L.A.-based small press.

In 2013, Boss Fight Books began with a simple mission: to publish great books about classic video games. Each of these books takes a critical, creative, historical, and personal look at a single game.


In order to both publicize and fund new titles, Boss Fight turned to crowd-funding. Books are released in "seasons" comprised of five or six titles.

Each season, Boss Fight runs a Kickstarter campaign. This re-engages previous readers, drums up early interviews and press, and provides a significant number of pre-sales.

Hard Luck is responsible for the interior layout and e-book editions of Boss Fight titles. As the press looks towards 2019 as an opportunity to scale, we're also helping them implement a new digital marketing strategy.
